Title: My Eyes Are Up Here (2022)
Director: Nathan Morris
Writer: Aminder Virdee // Arthur Meek
Studio: WIP Media

IMDb Plot: Sonya is a super-busy, sought-after model, and dating doesn't really fit her lifestyle. However, a one-night stand with a clumsy but considerate man changes her perspective.

Joe Says: My Eyes Are Up Here is an original romantic comedy that is heartwarming without being cliche; is modern and contemporary without being preachy.

Short films, when done correctly, should be teasing enough to prompt a desire to see what happens next. Yes, the filmmakers must establish that whole beginning-middle-end set that is all the rage but to create compelling characters that have the potential to expand, even when placed in the most ordinary of settings, makes that short story extraordinary. My Eyes Are Up Here is the perfect short film.

MEAUH shows Sonya (Jillian Mercado) and Tom (Ben Cura) as a couple, who really should not be a couple. And maybe they are not. Tom is as ordinary as asphalt. Sonya is a model. Oh, she also deals with a number of disabilities. And she has an attitude. But can you blame her? She’s independent. She’s beautiful. And she has to deal with it all.

Tom cannot. He sees Sonya not as less but as more and in doing so breaks the story out of any preconceived notions of the disabled – and those related to dating. My Eyes Are Up Here becomes an original romantic comedy about two different individuals, their reactions to a one-night stand, and how perspectives can change.

Written by Aminder Virdee and Arthur Meek, and directed by Nathan Morris My Eyes Are Up Here is heartwarming without being cliche; is modern and contemporary without being preachy. Virdee and Meek jump into the set up and deal with conflict while allowing each character to grow. Morris plays with the camera angles, looking up and down, getting low on the ground. He changes perspective to flow with the characters’ external motions as well as their insight.

My Eyes Are Up Here is a completely enjoyable story that demands high visibility, no matter where your eyes fall.
